Dear Heptabase User,
Last month, we introduced the AI chat feature. Since then, we've received overwhelmingly positive feedback. Many users have told us they no longer need to switch between Heptabase and NotebookLM or ChatGPT, as they can now chat with their cards and whiteboards directly within Heptabase. In the coming weeks, we’ll support adding images, PDFs, and your entire knowledge base as chat context.
While we believe AI can significantly empower your learning and research workflow, we also want to ensure you have complete control over when and how you want to use it. Currently, using AI chat requires you to bring your own API key from one of the major providers like OpenAI, Google Gemini, or Anthropic. In the future, we'll offer the option to use AI directly—but this will also be strictly opt-in. If you choose not to use AI features, your Heptabase experience will stay the same, and your data will never be shared with these AI providers.
Chat: Ask AI questions using selected whiteboards as context
In the latest version, you can add whiteboards as contexts to AI chat! In AI's response, we’ve introduced reference links to the cards and blocks that the response is grounded on, so you’re able to locate the source content.
Right now, the AI can read cards, texts, connections and sections on your whiteboard. In upcoming updates, we'll add support for images and mindmaps as well.
To add a whiteboard in the chat, just click the “+” button in the top left of the chat input window, or mention the whiteboard directly. You can also add multiple whiteboards at once!
Chat: Add emoji reactions to messages
In the latest version, we've supported emoji reactions to chat messages so that you can use them for lightweight bookmarking (personal use) and communication (multiplayer use).
This feature has significantly boosted productivity for the entire Heptabase team. We can now use emoji reactions to quickly respond to other team members. If you're unsure about how to start using our collaboration features, don't hesitate to reach out through our in-app support!
Search: Advanced filter for global search
In the latest version, we've added advanced filters to global search. You can now choose which card types to search for and specify whether to include the text elements and mind maps of whiteboards in the search results.
