Heptabase Updates - Zotero Integration, AI Suggested Questions, and more!
Dear Heptabase User,
AI capabilities are advancing rapidly, and we've been actively exploring how to bring the best of these advancements into Heptabase to support your learning and research. If you have any ideas about how AI could integrate better with Heptabase, we'd love to hear them!
App: Zotero Integration (Beta)
If you're a researcher who relies on Zotero, you know the challenge: valuable insights are scattered across dozens of papers, and bringing them into a workspace where you can review, connect, and build on those ideas has always required too much manual effort.
You can now connect your Zotero account and choose the specific collections you want to sync. Once connected, Heptabase will import all items from those collections into your space as source cards, complete with item metadata, PDF attachments, notes, and highlights.
This feature is currently in beta, and we'll continue improving it over time. We're planning to add the ability to place source cards directly on the whiteboard, generate citations from them during writing, and even let an AI research agent assist you with research across everything you've imported. To help us prioritize, please share your feedback through our in-app support.

Chat: AI Suggested Questions
Starting a conversation with AI can sometimes feel like staring at a blank page. Now, when you create a new chat, Heptabase will suggest relevant questions based on your context — giving you a natural starting point to dive into your materials.
To try it out, make sure you've enabled "AI Suggested Questions" in Settings → AI features.
Other product updates
We've also shipped several quality-of-life improvements:
- The desktop app now supports system themes, so Heptabase will automatically match your OS appearance setting.
- You can now switch between split, code, and preview modes for Mermaid blocks, making it easier to edit and visualize your diagrams.
- We've added support for Claude Opus 4.6, Claude Sonnet 4.6, and Gemini Pro 3.1 models in AI chat.
- You can now use your own OpenAI API key to transcribe podcast, audio, and video cards.
- Fixed an issue where some large code blocks weren't displaying correctly.
We hope that these updates will improve your experience on Heptabase and make your learning easier and more enjoyable.
If you have any feedback or suggestions, or you want to share your use cases or contents related to Heptabase, please don't hesitate to chat with us through our in app support.
Stay tuned for future updates, and we hope you have a great day!
